Contemplative Writing

I’m a contemplative person.  Maybe I’m a contemplative writer as well.

Sometimes when I sit down to write, I try to be like other writers who specialize in action.  I try to be a certain type.  But when I let things go, I find my writing at a slow pace.  I’m not plot driven, but character driven.  I like thoughts and small details.  I like how a setting, an event, or a word makes you feel.

I’m embracing that more.  When I practice my own voice and get the hang of that, perhaps I can try learning a different way of writing later–a different genre, a different style of voice.  But for right now this is what I’m working at.

“If a thriller is life sped up with no space inbetween, a literary novel is life slowed down where the spaces are what matter.” -Jonny Geller
